Main Street two-way conversion on the list of major road projects for 2026

Just in time for the October election the city of Hamilton is finally turning its attention to the condition of the city’s streets with an ambitious $106 Million repaving plan.  It is part of a $150 million spend in 2026 into bike lanes, growth related infrastructure, rehabilitation and repaving of roads across the city. 

Included in the plan is the conversion of Main Street to two-way traffic at a cost of just over 14 million. The project was originally scheduled to be completed in 2028, but Councillor Maureen Wilson asked staff to speed up the process to get the work done sooner.

In order to speed up the conversion, staff recommended WSP Canada be engaged on a sole-source contract to complete the detailed design and contract administration for the Main Street Two-Way Conversion Project. It was WSP who prepared a 2023 report on the conversion. Staff noted at that time,  “WSP Canada Inc. completed the Main Street two-way conversion study and are familiar with the project details and developed the preliminary design options.” This would knock 3 months off the construction schedule. Other measures to speed up the construction period would be for the city to pre-purchase traffic signal poles, signal heads, and other similar infrastructure components.
